Dave Scheiber: Editing Expertise
For 10 years, I served as the St. Petersburg Times' founding Weekend Magazine Editor, overseeing a talented staff of full-time critics in movies, television, pop music, classical music, dance, fine arts and food, as well as a staff of freelance writers. I coordinated weekly with a designer dedicated to the section, and worked regularly with the paper's art and photo departments, as well as our marketing staff to maximize Weekend's impact throughout the Tampa Bay area.
I also served during this period as the paper's daily entertainment editor, creating and overseeing arts, entertainment coverage appearing in the Times. Weekend was a signature section for many years after we launched the publication, which always featured a grabber of a cover and was packed with reviews, critics' recommendations, event advances, day-trip stories, and an abundance of interviews with visiting performers and artists. I managed the staff, conceived of the weekly covers and content, did performance reviews, managed a budget and found time to write occasional cover stories for the magazine as well. The experience ranks as one of my career highlights. All of us connected with Weekend were proud of the product we produced week in and week out. Here are just a few thumbnail samples of the more than 500 covers we produced during my years as Weekend Editor.
